The Art of Editing Modern Digital Photographs

Updated: Jan 22

Understanding the Editing Process

Editing a modern digital photograph is akin to developing an analogue photograph. The process requires precision and attention to detail to achieve the desired outcome.

Initially, I capture a photo as a RAW image. This format allows the digital file to retain as much information from the original exposure as possible. The RAW format is essential for high-quality editing.

The First Level Edit

The first level of editing is performed on the RAW file. During this stage, I focus on several key adjustments:

  • Colour Balance: Ensuring that the colours in the image are true to life.

  • Cropping: Removing any unwanted peripheral distractions.

  • Exposure Adjustment: Correcting the brightness and darkness of the image.

  • Levels and Curves: Fine-tuning the tonal range of the photograph.

Occasionally, I may also adjust the contrast and brightness to enhance the overall appearance. This standard edit is applied to many of the photos I create. Some images may require little or no adjustment, while others, such as star or Milky Way photos, necessitate extensive editing.

This level of editing is included with all my photography packages, as I must convert the image from RAW to JPEG for the client to view.

The Second Level Edit

The second or advanced level of editing is significantly more complex. This stage involves the use of specialised photo editing software, specifically Evoto.

Evoto excels at performing various enhancements, including:

  • Skin Blemish Correction: Quickly smoothing out imperfections.

  • Clothing Smoothing: Ensuring garments appear crisp and clean.

  • Background Changes: Altering or replacing the background to enhance the overall composition.

Despite its efficiency, this process requires considerable time and concentration. Additionally, the software is costly, which is reflected in my pricing structure. I charge £15.00 per photo for this advanced level of editing.

It is important to note that while some software can alter a person's body shape or composite multiple images into one, I do not engage in these practices. My focus remains on enhancing the existing photograph without compromising the subject's authenticity.

Pricing and Payment

The advanced level of editing is not included in any of my packages. Instead, it is charged per photo, and the editing is completed once the payment is received. This ensures that clients receive the highest quality of work tailored to their specific needs.

Conclusion

In summary, the editing process for modern digital photographs involves multiple levels of refinement. From the initial adjustments made to RAW files to the advanced techniques employed in specialised software, each step is crucial in delivering high-quality images.
